The Middle School years are marked by significant physical, social, emotional, and intellectual change. Our program provides a nurturing community where students explore their interests, develop their identities, and build the confidence they need for High School and beyond.

Our faculty and counseling team work closely with every student to help them navigate peer relationships, identity formation, and the emotional demands of adolescence, in a community where it’s safe to take risks and make mistakes.

The Hudson School’s Middle School curriculum challenges students across every discipline while ensuring they never have to navigate difficulty alone. Interdisciplinary learning helps students connect knowledge across subjects and see its real-world relevance. We don’t just cover material, we help students understand it deeply and apply their learning to real problems. Daily outdoor time helps students regulate their mood, sharpen their focus back in the classroom, and build the kind of independence and connection to campus that matters.

The immersive learning of a language does more than build vocabulary. It strengthens memory, builds cognitive flexibility, and helps middle schoolers practice the kind of patience and risk-taking it takes to be understood.

Starting the day as one community, grades 5 through grade 8, gives students something bigger than themselves to belong to during years when peer groups can feel small and shifting.

Learning from teachers who also teach in the Upper School gives middle schoolers a preview of where they’re headed and access to real depth in a subject, not just grade-level coverage.

The Bridge Year
Fifth graders step into middle school with a small, familiar team of teachers and a longer afternoon homeroom to lean on, an intentional bridge from the elementary classroom to the independence ahead.
Deeper Foundations
Sixth graders work with a wider group of teachers as their day grows more specialized. The afternoon homeroom shortens, and students take on more responsibility for managing a fuller, more varied schedule.
Critical Thinkers
By seventh grade, students learn from subject-specific teachers in every core class. They earn more independence, too, moving between our buildings and managing their own time at breaks as trusted members of the community.
Ready for High School
Eighth graders carry a full slate of subject-specialist classes and real leadership: off-campus privileges, running Morning Gatherings for the division, and mentoring Lower Schoolers as reading buddies. They graduate ready for the Upper School.
