From Preschool through Grade 4, The Hudson School’s Lower School nurtures every child’s natural love of learning in warm, joyful classrooms on our Willow Avenue campus.
Student-centered classrooms built for exploration.
From Preschool through Grade 4, The Hudson School’s Lower School nurtures every child’s natural love of learning in warm, joyful, Reggio Emilia–inspired classrooms. Children learn best when they feel secure and valued. Our experienced Lower School teachers create welcoming classrooms where students are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and follow their curiosity, building confidence alongside skills from the very first day.
Strong foundations in every subject.
Students develop reading, writing, and mathematical fluency through evidence-based literacy and conceptual math program. Science classes foster inquiry thinking through hands-on investigation. Social Studies helps children understand communities and citizenship. Enrichment in Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education, Library, Technology, and Spanish, beginning in Kindergarten, rounds out a comprehensive education that engages every dimension of a child’s growth.
Confident kids who care for one another.
We recognize that academic achievement and emotional well-being are deeply connected. Through intentional community-building, our students learn to identify and express their emotions, develop empathy, and practice conflict resolution. Differences are celebrated, and every child is valued, creating a school community where students show up ready and eager to learn.
Integrated, hands-on, and developmentally attuned.
From Preschool through Grade 4, our curriculum honors both academic challenge and the reality of how young children develop, stretching students intellectually while respecting individual learning styles and paces. Literacy and Mathematics are taught through rigorous, multi-modal approaches; Science and Social Studies bring the world into the classroom through direct investigation and discussion. Play-based exploration, hands-on materials, collaborative projects, and small-group instruction work together so every child builds real skills and loves the process of learning. The Arts, Physical Education, and Spanish enrich every week, not as extras, but as essential parts of a complete education.
Nurturing the whole child from the very start.
Our Toddler Classes are designed around the way young children actually learn: through movement, sensory play, repetition, and loving relationships with trusted adults. In small, carefully structured groups on our Willow Avenue campus, our early childhood teachers create an environment that is safe, stimulating, and joyful, helping each child develop at their own pace while building the social and cognitive foundations that will serve them throughout school.

What makes Lower School special.
-
Small Classes, Real Relationships
Intentionally small groupings in each grade mean every teacher knows every child well, and tailors instruction to each learner’s pace and interests.
-
Play-Based and Hands-On
From science investigations to art projects and daily outdoor time, children learn by doing, making abstract ideas concrete and genuinely meaningful.
-
Enrichment Woven In
Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education, Library, Technology, Spanish (beginning in Kindergarten), and Drama are integrated into every week, not treated as add-ons.
-
Social-Emotional at the Core
We build emotional intelligence, empathy, and conflict-resolution skills alongside reading and math, because academic success and personal well-being grow together.
