Where students learn to see.

The Department of Fine Art and Art History at The Hudson School pairs rigorous studio practice with the history of art — developing both technical skill and a lasting visual intelligence.

Our Philosophy

Rigorous exploration meets passionate practice.

The philosophy of the Department of Fine Art and Art History is premised on a rigorous exploration of fine art and passionate practice. Students engage with drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history as a unified discipline — learning not just technique, but how to think, respond, and communicate visually.

Studio & History

Making and understanding, side by side.

Art History courses at Hudson examine major movements and traditions from antiquity to contemporary practice. Studio work runs in parallel — students apply historical insight directly to their own art-making, deepening both critique and creative output across all four Upper School years.
