The year critical thinking begins.

Fifth grade at The Hudson School is an exciting bridge year: students deepen their skills in every core subject, discover how to think independently, and take their first confident steps as middle schoolers.

Language Arts and History

Reading, writing, and exploring ancient worlds.

In Language Arts, 5th graders build rich vocabularies, develop reading comprehension and fluency, and work toward writing structured three-to-five paragraph essays by year’s end—with character development themes woven throughout. History takes students to ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece, including visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a “Three Epochs of Egypt” project, and a Greek symposium re-enactment. Coordinator: Beslinda Pazaj.

Mathematics and Science

From physics to 3-D printing.

Mathematics establishes common foundations in place value, fractions, decimals, geometry, ratios, and linear graphs through real-world problem-solving. Science brings physics to life through experimentation: forces and motion, fluid dynamics, electricity, simple machines—and a memorable 3-D printed “Vertical Marble Run” project that demonstrates aerodynamic principles. Students apply the laws of physics through creative design challenges all year long.

A full creative and digital education.

  • Visual Arts: History and Practice

Students explore art history from Prehistoric through Renaissance, creating original work in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and design using the building blocks of line, color, form, shape, texture, and volume.

  • Theater and Performance

Students develop character creation, diction, and spatial awareness while also learning production skills—sets, lighting, and sound—culminating in Greek Skits and full-scale historical productions drawn from literature class.

  • Music: Theory to Songwriting

Music classes move from theory to pop-style songwriting, recorder instruction, and performance. Optional private lessons and ensembles, Middle School Chorus, and Jazz Ensemble are available.

  • Technology and Digital Design

Project-based technology work covers word processing, 3-D modeling with CAD software (the annual “Chess Piece Challenge”), and audio editing with Audacity (the “Summertime Mixtape” project).
