A foundation built to last.
Our Lower School program serves students from Pre-K through 4th grade, creating a nurturing environment where young learners develop essential academic skills, social competencies, and a genuine love of learning that will carry them for a lifetime.
Balancing rigor with developmental readiness.
We believe in an approach that honors both academic challenge and the reality of how young children develop. Our curriculum is designed to stretch students intellectually while respecting individual learning styles and paces. Play-based exploration, hands-on manipulation of materials, collaborative projects, and small-group instruction work together so every child builds real skills—and loves the process of learning.

Students develop reading, writing, and mathematical fluency through a balanced literacy and conceptual math program. Science classes foster inquiry thinking through hands-on investigation. Social Studies helps children understand communities and citizenship. Enrichment in Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education, Library, Technology, and Spanish—beginning in Kindergarten—rounds out a comprehensive education that engages every dimension of a child’s growth.

Confident kids who care for one another.
We recognize that academic achievement and emotional well-being are deeply connected. Through intentional community-building, our students learn to identify and express their emotions, develop empathy, and practice conflict resolution. Differences are celebrated, and every child is valued—creating a school community where students show up ready and eager to learn.

What defines every day in Lower School.
-
Small Classes (Max 16 Students)
Low teacher-to-student ratios ensure individualized attention and allow teachers to know each child’s strengths, interests, and learning needs.
-
Daily Outdoor Time
Fresh air and physical activity are non-negotiable. Students have structured outdoor time each day, supporting physical health and cognitive readiness for learning.
-
Character Development Focus
Compassion, commitment, and courage—the values at the heart of The Hudson School—are woven throughout Lower School life, from classroom routines to how students resolve disagreements.
-
Parent Partnership
We view families as essential partners in each child’s education. Open communication, family events, and collaborative goal-setting keep parents meaningfully connected to their child’s growth.
