From the earliest origins to the present day.

Music at The Hudson School spans the full arc of the Western Classical tradition — and reaches beyond it. Students study history and theory while singing, playing, and listening with genuine depth.

Music History & Theory

A journey through the Western Classical tradition.

Hudson’s music curriculum covers the history of Western Classical tradition from its earliest origins to the present day. Students explore Gregorian chant, Baroque counterpoint, the Classical and Romantic eras, twentieth-century modernism, and contemporary music — building a rich and continuous understanding of how music has evolved.

Choral Program

Singing together as a school community.

The Hudson School choir is a cornerstone of the Upper School experience. Students rehearse and perform together across the academic year, developing ensemble skills, ear training, and the experience of making music in community — culminating in performances that bring the whole school together.

Listening & Appreciation

Music as a lifelong practice of listening.

Beyond performance, Hudson’s music program develops genuine listeners. Students learn to analyze scores, discuss performances, and engage with music as an art form with its own language, logic, and emotional power — a habit of mind that lasts well beyond graduation.
